Lantau Attractions

Sightseeing attractions on Lantau cover a whole range from the modern to the historical, each with its own unique flavour. While the island is large and could be explored over a lifetime there are a few key areas and sights which really say what Lantau means.

Giant Buddha / Po Lin Monastery / Ngong Ping 360

Tai O Fishing Village - One of the few traditional fishing villages in Hong Kong. Read more here.

Mui Wo / Silvermine Bay - Previously the most popular area for day trips, it is still a good place to explore the beach, hill sides and eat traditional Chinese seafood in street restaurants.

Lantau Peak / Sunset Peak / Lantau Trail - Hiking trails lead through the country parks of Lantau coming up to the two high peaks offering great views, when the weather is clear, of Lantau and the sea.

Hong Kong Disneyland - The international theme park.

Chinese White / Pink Dolphins - Off the coast of Lantau can be found these rare creatures which are now protected in Hong Kong waters. Viewing trips on boats are regularly held.

Citygate Outlet - This large commercial development adjacent to the airport houses both a large mall and a Novhotel, but is most famed for it's "outlet" where end of lines of large brands are sold at massive discounts. A fashionistas dream come true.

Tsz Hing Monastery - Also known as Tsu Hing Monastery this building was built in 1930 and is on a peak overlooking Tai O.  It is one of the largest buildings in the Keung Shan area. A popular place for overseas monks to come for retreat.  Nearby is the Man Po Flying Dragon, a life-size statue of a Chinese dragon in flight.

Shek Pik Reservoir - Completed in 1963 this reservoir is one of the many that supply freshwater to Hong Kong. It was constructed by damming a valley that lead to the sea. It is located in the country park area and can be visited by hiking. No bathing is allowed in the reservoir.

Cheung Sha Beach - An official public beach on the south side of Lantau that is easily accessible by road, the Cheung Sha Bea offers changing rooms and life guards during the swimming season. Nearby restaurants offer a range of dining options.

Discovery Bay Golf Course - Designed originally by designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr this challenging course now has three 9 hole courses. Situated at 230 meters above sea level it has views overlook the south china sea. Although open every day there are limited slots available to no members so it is best to make enquiries in advance. Tung Chung Fort - Dated to 1832 this is one of the oldest continuously used buildings in Hong Kong. Originally a garrison for the Chinese Imperial Navy it is now a monument and museum.

 

Don't forget that there are also many other Hong Kong attractions outside of Lantau, visit some of those also.

Food Specialties

Lantau is home to some of the most special foods in Hong Kong. Don't miss out on the vegetarian delights served by the Po Lin Monastery right next to the Giant Buddha statue, nor the authentic preserved seafoods and condiments which are made and sold around Tai O village.

Dining choices have never been larger on Lantau but leave space always for the special snacks such as Egg Waffles and Mango stuffed sticky rice dumplings which you will find only in more authentic parts of Hong Kong.
